FAQ'S

FAQ'S

  • Cupping therapy is an ancient treatment where suction is applied to the skin using cups, improving blood flow, relieving muscle tension, and promoting healing. It’s commonly used in physiotherapy to alleviate pain and improve movement.

  • Cupping creates suction on the skin, which pulls underlying tissues into the cup. This promotes increased blood flow to the area, helps reduce muscle tension, softens fascia, and can aid in the body’s natural healing process.

  • Cupping sessions typically last between 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the treatment plan and targeted areas.

  • The most common side effect is temporary bruise-like marks or redness where the cups were applied, which usually fades within a few days. In rare cases, skin irritation and skin infection may occur. Your physiotherapist will guide you on aftercare to reduce any potential discomfort.

  • Yes absolutely! Cupping is often used alongside other physiotherapy treatments we offer, like manual therapy, dry needling and exercise rehabilitation to enhance results and support your overall recovery.

  • The frequency of cupping therapy depends on your specific condition and goals. Some people benefit from weekly sessions, while others may only need treatment every few weeks or months. Your physiotherapist will create a tailored plan based on your needs.

  • Cupping therapy should not be painful. You may feel a tight pulling sensation during treatment, but most people find it relaxing. Some redness or mild bruising is normal after treatment but typically fades within a few days.

  • Cupping therapy isn’t suitable for everyone. You should avoid cupping if you have:

    • Open wounds, rashes, or skin infections (e.g., eczema, psoriasis).

    • Blood disorders (e.g., hemophilia) or are taking blood-thinning medication.

    • Cancer in the area being treated, especially if undergoing radiation.

    • Varicose veins or a history of blood clots (e.g., deep vein thrombosis).

    • Fever or feeling unwell.

    • Pregnancy (avoid the abdomen and lower back areas).

    • Diabetes due to slower wound healing (discuss this first with your GP).

    • Recent surgery in the treatment area.

    • Fractures or dislocations.

    • Acute musculoskeletal injury.

    • Muscle dystrophy.

    • Excessive swelling.

    • Pacemaker.

    • Low blood pressure or other acute circulatory conditions.

    • Herniated or bulging discs.

    • Acute rheumatoid arthritis.

    • Hypersensitivity of the skin.

    • Aneurysm.

    • Haematoma.

    • Infectious disease.

Always consult with your physiotherapist and local healthcare provider to ensure cupping is the right option for you!

    • Hydrate: Stay hydrated! Since cupping helps your lymphatic system clear cellular waste, staying hydrated is key for effective treatment.

    • Pre-Appointment Snack: Eat something about an hour before your session.

    • Skip the Shaving: Please don’t shave the area within four hours of your appointment.

    • Sunburn Recovery: If you’ve been sunburned, it’s best to wait before your cupping session. The cups can make the area feel warmer, which won’t be pleasant on sunburned skin. Soothing aloe can help your skin recover in the meantime.

    • Avoid Exfoliation: Avoid exfoliation before your appointment. It can make your skin extra sensitive. Wait a couple of days after any intense exfoliation before getting cupping to ensure a comfortable experience.

  • Your physiotherapist will provide you with a detailed after-care guide at the end of your session, but here’s what to expect:

    • Drink lots of water:
Water helps flush your lymphatic system of the cellular waste that cupping helps release from your tissues.

    • Stay warm: Try to cover the area(s) where you received cupping.

    • Rest: You may feel more tired than normal or experience flu-like symptoms after cupping (headache or general body aches). This is a temporary reaction by your immune system to the cellular waste that cupping helps release.

    • Allow 48 hours before training or high intensity exercise.

    • Light movement! Go for a walk the next day

    • Avoid Caffeine, alcohol, sugary foods and drinks, dairy, and processed meats
These foods slow down your body’s ability to process the treatment.

    • Avoid Hot showers, saunas, hot tubs and strong air conditioning
After cupping, your skin will be more sensitive to temperature in the areas where the cups were placed. Give your skin time to recover. If possible, shower with filtered water to avoid reintroducing unnecessary chemicals onto your skin.
